Download and Install FTP Commnader

Allow the program to install in its default location.
Once installed, run it. You should get a view similar to the one below.

  • There will be several servers listed in the "Server List." You should delete all of these. We will not need any of these for our purposes.

Setup

This is where we get you set up to make a connection between your "U" drive (school network), and my webserver.

Step 1) On the "Local Computer" side of FTP Commander, click on the folder and navigate to your "Math" directory on your "U" drive.

Step 2) On the "FTP servers" side of FTP Commander, click on "New Server."

Step 3) When you click on the "New Server" button, you should see a new dialogue box similar to the one below. Be sure to fill it in exactly as instructed.

Name - Name "your server." I suggest you name it using your first and last name.

FTP Server - This is my server and its location. Type "ftp.robertfant.com" just as it is in this example.

FTP Port - The default is 21. This should not require changing.

User ID - This will be your first and last name (all lower case letters with no spaces), followed by "@robertfant.com"

Password - This is the password that I gave you in class. (All letters are UPPER CASE).

Check Boxes -

  • Check "Passive Mode"
  • UnCheck "Save Password" (This would allow anyone using this computer to get onto your website. NO, NO!)
  • Check "Mask Password"
  • UnCheck "Anonymous Login"

FTP Server Response Time - Should be set to "default" and the two check boxes below it should be "UNchecked."

Finally, click on "Save."

Make the CONNECTION

If all went well, you should be back to this view. Let's send a file to my server.

  1. Make sure that your "U" drive and your "Math" folder is showing on the "Local Computer" side.
  2. Click on the "Connect" button or Double-Click on your server name.
  3. Select your "Index.html" file from your "U" drive.
  4. Push the "Right" arrow (in the middle). This sends files in the direction indicated.
  5. If the connection was made, you should see a copy of your file on the server side of the window. You should also see a message indicating that the transfer was successful, in the gray (lower) area of the window.
