Distance education is rapidly becoming more and more prevalent in the way education is conducted. I believe that to not expose our students to such technologies is doing them a dis-service.
- We live 4 hours from Manhattan, (Kansas State University). Had it not been for my wife's professors being willing to work with her via these technologies, she would not have been able to finish her Masters degree.
- As of the Fall '08 semester, any Kansas student can now take high school classes online with "Insight Schools".
Some tools I use:
- Skype - Students may call me (by appointment or when I'm online). This tool is used for voice, text chat, and video conferencing.
For a demonstration of these next tools, install Skype, give me a call and I would be happy to SHOW YOU how they work. They're really cool.
My Skype username is: rfantster
- Zoho Meeting (Web conferencing) - Once communication has been established, I can set-up a "meeting" using Zoho and share my desktop with students showing them how to operate any of my applications. Registration is required by the teacher, but it is FREE.
- WizIQ - A "virtual classroom" environment. Teachers can upload PowerPoint slideshows, PDF documents, etc. These documents can be viewed, written (commented) on, by all members of the class. WizIQ is an extremely exciting tool! Registration is required, but FREE.
